🩸 WHO CĂTĂLINA WAS
The human life Cătălina shows begins in Moldavia in the early seventeenth century, north of Iași.
Her household kept orchards, stores and accounts. She learned letters for the ledgers, and herbs, prayers and household protections from the women around her.
Widowed in her thirties, she took control of property relatives expected to pass into male hands. She negotiated rents, kept the stores sound and refused arrangements built on the assumption that she could be frightened.
At night another reputation grew.
Women came through the kitchen with wax, thread, water and questions about marriages, nightmares, envy and the evil eye. Cătălina knew descântece — spoken charms and counter-charms — and was known for dreams that proved useful.
Some called her wise.
Others called her strigoaică.
Her death came in winter in her late forties. The last human image is snow at the threshold.
The next is Cătălina standing beyond the gate of her burial ground, looking back toward the house.
The witch had not disappeared.
🌑 THE WITCH BEFORE THE VAMPIRE
Romanian folklore does not always separate witch and vampire cleanly.
Older accounts describe living strigoi — witches or sorcerers whose souls could move apart from the body — alongside dead strigoi, the returning revenants. The female form, strigoaică, sits directly inside that overlap.
Accounts also place living and dead strigoi together at boundaries, churchyards and forests, exchanging incantations.
Cătălina belongs to that ambiguity.
The vampire inherited the witch.
