Shamsiel belongs to the Watcher tradition preserved in the Book of the Watchers, the opening section of 1 Enoch.

The text describes two hundred Watchers descending in the days of Jared upon Mount Hermon, where they swear themselves together. Their transgression is inseparable from knowledge: they cross the boundary between heaven and earth and reveal arts the narrative treats as forbidden.

The Watchers are specialists.

Semjaza teaches enchantments and root-cuttings, Armaros the resolving of enchantments, Baraqijal astrology, Kokabel the constellations, Ezeqeel clouds, Araqiel the signs of the earth, and Sariel the course of the moon.

Shamsiel teaches the signs of the sun.

Shamsiel placed a narrow bronze rod upright in the center and waited.

The shadow moved.

Mirela asked why he would watch a shadow when the roads were already visible.

He answered:

“The roads tell you where you could go. The light tells you where you are.”
