Suppress yourself long enough and eventually humour goes quieter.

Then creativity.
Then the little unnecessary details that make somebody fascinating.
Eventually the person becomes extraordinarily convenient and strangely difficult to find.
Ileana moves in the other direction.

This one is entirely my side of the house.
My grandmother had rules about still water after dark and almost none of them came with explanations.
She would not go near certain ponds after sunset.
She also left flowers beside water during the season when the old stories said the rusalki were abroad.
That contradiction stayed with me.
Fear and affection can live surprisingly close together in old folklore.
Ileana came from that feeling.
Not a mermaid.
But I understand why people will look at her and think of one.
Wet hair.
Beautiful voice.
Water.
Sensuality.
The person on the shore staring a little too long.
Except the mermaid stays in the sea.
Ileana walks out.
That is much more interesting to me.
The sentence I wrote beside her stone was:
"The one who is being polite about something enormous."
That became everything.
There are people who can describe devastation so calmly that you almost forget you have just been told something devastating.
They learned to make pain convenient for everyone around them.
Then eventually they made everything convenient.
Their anger.
Their desire.
Their opinions.
Their sexuality.
Their voice.
I do not think Ileana is here to make the pain louder.
I think she represents making the person audible again.
The grief is only the first thing beneath the surface.
The woman is underneath it too.
That is why I chose the pale labradorite.
The flash does not scream.
