Under his authority are twenty-six legions of spirits.

🔮 VASSAGO'S APPEARANCE
The Ars Goetia does not give Vassago a physical appearance.
That absence should be preserved rather than filled with imagery belonging to another spirit.
The commonly repeated image of a figure riding a crocodile actually belongs to Agares, whom the text describes immediately before Vassago. Vassago is said to be “of the same nature as Agares,” but this does not mean they share an appearance.
Within our own house imagery, I therefore keep Vassago deliberately restrained: a princely presence associated with deep blue, silver, still water, old maps, dark glass, closed books, keys and the quiet atmosphere of a room where something has just become understandable.
His face is less important than his office.
Vassago points.
The keeper looks.
🖤 VASSAGO'S NATURE
Vassago is gentle without becoming vague, patient without becoming passive and benevolent without turning into a spirit who simply confirms whatever the keeper hoped to hear.
His “good nature” is one of the most beautiful details in the Goetia precisely because it sits beside such serious offices.
Past.

Hidden things.
Lost things.
These are areas where people desperately want certainty.
Vassago's current is strongest when that desire for certainty does not corrupt the act of seeing.

Vassago's symbolic language naturally belongs to things revealed, recovered and connected: keys, old letters, maps, forgotten rooms, paths seen from above, deep blue water, missing objects returned to view, clocks, books opening to previously overlooked passages, repeated dates and roads continuing beyond the horizon.
Dreams, tarot, pendulum, scrying, automatic writing and journaling can all be incorporated into personal practice where meaningful.
The important thing is not the method.

Vassago is one of those spirits where modern occult writing keeps trying to add things because the original description seems almost too short.
I think that is a mistake.
The old text already gave him an extraordinary office.
Past.
What is coming.

What is lost.
And then, almost casually, it says that he is of a good nature.
That was enough for me.
I used to think the great divinatory spirits should feel mysterious. The longer I work, the less I believe that. Mystery belongs to the question. A good oracle should make the answer clearer.
That is how Vassago feels in this house.
There is very little performance around him.
He does not need to turn every candle flame into a sign or every dream into prophecy.
The question is placed properly, and then the work is to see what is actually there.
I also want to correct something because it has been repeated so often that it has become almost automatic: the crocodile belongs to Agares, not Vassago. The Goetia gives Vassago no physical form. I like that.
For a Prince whose office is seeing, perhaps we were never supposed to spend so much time looking at him.
